indie authors marketing chat of doom

Marketing our writing as indie authors can be an exhausting and lonely task.

To that end, I’m currently fleshing out a chat for indie authors to collaborate, share, and grow in our marketing strategies. Here are some details that are currently being fleshed out.

Who is running the show?

  • Author Nat Weaver (that’s me). I’ll be spearheading the endeavor. I’ll be organizing, doing moderation of the chat, and co-hosting the monthly calls.
  • Author Wyrd Lea will be co-hosting the monthly call with me and providing backup moderator help in the chat.

What to expect:

  • A monthly virtual call to discuss how things went that month, what plans we have for the upcoming month, and share ideas and resources.
  • Occasionally bring in experts to talk shop in the monthly call and do a Q&A.
  • Keep an asynchronous group chat on the side where we can talk throughout the month.
  • The group will focus on these areas for marketing:
    • Social media marketing with Meta apps (Threads, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp).
    • Author newsletters.
    • Author websites.
    • Author blogs.
    • Face-to-face or virtual events.

Criteria for joining:

  • Must be an indie or self-published author.
  • Must be active on Threads. The current asynchronous group chat exists there. We may move the group chat off Threads, if we all agree to. I’ll update this criteria here, if we do.
  • No generative AI use. This means if you use generative AI at all in your process, you cannot join. This could be in your writing, book covers, or social media.
  • I will do some vetting based on your Threads profile and posts.

Content moderation policies:

  • No bigotry. This will be an inclusive space. So no racism, transphobia, homophobia, or hate of any kind.
  • No harassment. Do not harass members of the chat. And respect boundaries.
  • No genre hate. All genre authors are welcome, so do not disparage other genres.
  • No spam.
  • No fundraising or mutual aid requests. If you need aid, we can find that elsewhere on your socials, and choose as individuals to help. But posting that to the call or chat will be considered inappropriate.
  • Let’s keep the overall tone professional. Doesn’t mean we aren’t fun. But let’s avoid oversharing personal details. We are also not trained medical professionals, so if you are struggling mentally and in a crisis, we will likely not be able to provide the help you need.
  • Be sure to label potentially triggering content. If you write about topics that can be triggering and your marketing touches on that, just be mindful to provide trigger warnings if asking for feedback on something that may trigger someone.

Breaking any of these rules could result in being banned from the group. We will try to use a strike or warning system, but flagrant abuses may be dealt with swifter — such as immediately spamming the chat or blatant bigotry.
